America gone astray
“Justice Department won’t defend DACA in Texas lawsuit” ( https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/09/politics/daca-lawsuit-texas/index.html )
My grandparents came to America with nothing but their brogue and determination to make life better for their children. I spent a very emotional day when I first visited Ellis Island thinking what they must have thought leaving County Cork 3,000 miles behind and standing in America for the first time.
Every American needs to read the words on the Statue of liberty. They explain what it means to be an American, but with trump and Sessions in charge, these words may have lost their meaning. More catastrophically, America may have lost it’s way! I’m sure my Nana and Pop would be shedding a tear along with Lady Liberty if they had to live through the weakening of America and the misery that is trump.
The New Colossus
“Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-lost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
