Last night I watched a very, very intense movie staring Tom Hanks, entitled Greyhound. It’s the story of the crew of the U.S. destroyer, “Greyhound”, responsible for escorting U.S. merchant ships through the north Atlantic, providing much needed supplies to Great Britain at the beginning of World War II. Tom Hanks plays Capt. Ernest Krause, commander of the Greyhound and his captivating acting has much to do with the the intensity of the movie.

Even though the characters and events are fictional Greyhound is inspired by events during the Battle of the Atlantic, . The movie is actually based on a 1955 novel by C S Forester titled The Good Shepherd. Greyhound does a enthralling job portraying the Battle of the Atlantic and the conflict between German “wolfpack” U-boats and the Allied convoys.

Most importantly Greyhound is the story of the unrelenting bravery of the sailors of ships like the Greyhound who were completely committed to their mission, each other and the individuals on the merchant ships they were assigned to protect through overwhelming numbers of German U-boats.

Fast-forward eighty years and instead of young people fighting to protect others we have them fighting to enter night clubs in Key West, Florida, while insisting they should’t…
