Pay attention to Prince William, not Jeff Bezos!
It’s likely coincidental that Prince William would criticize the Bezos et. al. gratuitous flights to the edge of space the same day the Guardian published a stunning article, “The Climate Disaster is here”.
The Guardian authors write “The last time it was hotter than now was at least 125,000 years ago, while the atmosphere has more heat-trapping carbon dioxide in it than any time in the past two million years, perhaps more.”
Prince William rightly points out “We need some of the world’s greatest brains and minds fixed on trying to repair this planet, not trying to find the next place to go and live.” The prince went on to say “ it would be an “absolute disaster” if his son, Prince George, were to be talking about saving the planet in 30 years’ time” but that’s exactly what will happen if we continue to waste precious scientific and engineering resources on theatrics instead of life saving science.
After a Covid-induced blip last year, greenhouse gas emissions have roared back in 2021, further dampening slim hopes that the world will keep within the 1.5C limit. “There’s a high chance we will get to 1.5C in the next decade,” said Joeri Rogelj, a climate scientist at Imperial College London.
According to the Guardian, as the adjacent map illustrates “By the end of the century, the hottest regions of North America ( in red) may be UNLIVABLE without major adaptions.”
It’s beyond time to pay attention to Prince William and not Jeff Bezos!
