Soft Spots
In writing about “life”and particularly “human” life I’ve attempted to distinguish between a “physical view” and a “social view” of life. I attributed physical life to biologists like Peter Luisi and George Church while attributing social life to social scientists like Brandon Stanton and David Reich, even though Dr. Reich is technically a geneticist.
I’ve pointed-out that Stanton wrote that “Everyone is hiding behind their shield. …if our shields are what separate us, it’s what behind them that brings us together,
- the struggles,
- the worries,
- the pain,
- the weakness.
…All of the soft spots… It’s the soft spots that make us most relatable to each other…”
If we’re ever to understand what it means to be human we must recognize and discuss our “soft spots”. In addition, I wrote “two complex patterns that look precisely alike are a hallmark of life”.
It’s only after rereading those words that I understand what I was trying to say and that is, if we want to understand human life we must understand the soft spots that bring human beings together while looking for patterns among the soft spots.
