Trump! A modern-day Caligula
The Praetorian Guard was an elite unit of the Imperial Roman army whose members served as personal bodyguards and intelligence for the Roman emperors.
Due to the turmoil of civil war and social strife, Augustus saw the need to create a body of soldiers that would swear undivided loyalty to his person. Unlike other military units, the Praetorian Guards would only engage in combat or go on campaigns at the direct behest of Augustus. Major monetary distributions or food subsidies renewed and compensated the fidelity of the Praetorians following each failed plot (such as that of Messalina against Claudius in AD 48 or Piso against Nero in AD 65).
trump seems to think Federal troops are his Praetorian Guard. However, he should be reminded several emperors were actually assassinated by their own Praetorian Guards. The Emperor, Caligula, described as a noble and moderate during the first six months of his rule sources focus upon his cruelty, sadism, extravagance, and sexual perversion, presenting him as an insane tyrant after that.
A financial crisis emerged in 39 and Caligula’s political payments for support, generosity and extravagance had exhausted the state’s treasury. Ancient historians state that Caligula began falsely accusing, fining and even killing individuals for the purpose of seizing their estates. Eventually Caligula was assassinated as a result of a conspiracy by officers of the Praetorian Guard, senators, and courtiers.
Caligula’s resemblance to trump is uncanny.
