Just two days ago I wrote a Medium.com piece describing trump as a “Modern-day Caligula” ( https://medium.com/@WillmsmithSmith/trump-a-modern-day-caligula-de5cb388b553 ). For those of you who have not had the joy of taking four years of college-level Latin as I have, I’ll just remind you that Caligula has been described as a noble and moderate Emperor during the first six months of his rule but then became focused upon cruelty, sadism, extravagance, and sexual perversion, and presented as an insane tyrant. He was eventually assassinated as a result of a conspiracy by the senators, courtiers and officers of his own Praetorian Guard,

Due to the turmoil of civil war and social strife, Emperor Augustus (63 BC — 14 AD) saw the need to create a body of soldiers that would swear undivided loyalty to his person. Unlike other military units, “his” Praetorian Guard would only engage in combat or go on campaigns at the direct behest of Augustus. The Pratorian Guard continued to serve Roman Emperors after Augustus, including Caligula (37 AD— 41 AD).

With the deployment of federal troops to confront protestors in Lafayette Square, so he could walk to a photo opportunity in front of St. John’s Episcopal Church, trump seems to think, like Caligula, he has his own Praetorian Guard.
